Math explanation please?
Okay. So I am not cheating I know the answers, I just don’t understand how to get them.
Here is the question:
The heights of five famous human-made structures are related as follows:
- The height of the Statue of Liberty is 65 feet more than half the height of the Great Pyramid at Giza.
-The height of the Eiffel Tower is 36 feet more than three times the height of Big Ben.
-The Great Pyramid at Giza is 164 feet taller than Big Ben.
-The Leaning Tower of Pisa is 137 feet shorter than Big Ben.
-The total of all the heights is nearly half a mile. In fact, the sum of the five heights is 2264 feet.
Find the height of each of the five structures.
I am not trying to cheat. I have been working on this problem for an hour. I eventually just looked up the height of Big Ben and worked from there. I am desperate to learn how to do this please help me.
And if it helps you help me, the heights are:
Eiffel Tower = 984ft.
Statue of Liberty = 305ft.
The Great Pyramid = 580ft.
Big Ben = 316ft.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa = 179ft.
Thank you all so much for your help!!!!!
Let S = the height of the Statue of Liberty
Let E = the height of the Eiffel Tower
Let G = the height of the Great Pyramid
Let L = the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa
Let B = the height of Big Ben
We’re given:
1) S = 65+?G
2) E = 36+3B
3) G = 164+B
4) L = B-137
5) S + E + G + L + B = 2264
We need to solve this 5-variable system of equations.
Notice that E, G and L are all expressed in terms of B.
We want to express S in terms of B as well.
Substitute equation #3 into equation #1 and solve:
S = 65 + ?G
S = 65 + ?(164+B)
S = 65 + 82 + ?B
S = 147 + ?B
This is our new equation #1
Now substitute the first four equations into equation #5:
S + E + G + L + B = 2264
(147+?B) + (36+3B) + (164+B) + (B-137) + B = 2264
147 + ?B + 36 + 3B + 164 + B + B - 137 + B = 2264
210 + 6.5B = 2264
6.5B = 2054
B = 316
So Big Ben is 316 feet tall.
Plug that into equations 2 thru 5 to find the other values.
